VICIdial (IVR)

Interactive Voice Response

IVR (Interactive Voice Response) is an automated telephony system that interacts with callers through pre-recorded voice prompts and DTMF keypad input. In VICIdial, IVR functionality is implemented through call menus — the configurable routing trees that greet callers, present options, and direct calls to the appropriate inbound groups or destinations.

How It Works in VICIdial

VICIdial’s IVR system is built on Asterisk’s call handling capabilities and is configured through the call menu interface in the admin panel. IVR flows can range from simple single-level menus (“Press 1 for Sales”) to complex multi-tier trees with conditional routing based on caller input, time of day, and caller ID matching.

For advanced IVR logic, VICIdial supports AGI and FastAGI scripts that can execute custom programming during the call flow — querying external databases, performing account lookups, or implementing complex routing decisions that go beyond simple DTMF menu selection. This enables self-service applications like account balance inquiries, appointment confirmations, and payment processing.

IVR systems in VICIdial can also be used for outbound purposes — press-1 campaigns where the dialer calls leads and plays a recorded message, routing only interested respondents (who press 1) to live agents in an inbound group.

Why It Matters

IVR systems reduce the number of calls requiring live agent handling, lower average handle time by pre-qualifying callers, and provide 24/7 availability for basic inquiries. A well-designed IVR can handle 20-40% of inbound calls without agent involvement through self-service options.

However, poorly designed IVRs frustrate callers with excessive menu levels, confusing options, or long prompts. VICIdial’s call menu system makes it easy to iterate on IVR design based on caller behavior data. See the analytics dashboard feature page for IVR performance tracking.
