Cost Per Lead

Cost per lead (CPL) is the total expense incurred to generate a single qualified lead or conversion through outbound calling. It encompasses all operational costs — agent wages, telephony charges (carrier per-minute rates), lead data acquisition, VICIdial infrastructure, and management overhead — divided by the number of conversions produced. CPL is the primary financial efficiency metric for outbound campaigns.

How It Works in VICIdial

CPL is not calculated automatically within VICIdial, but the platform provides all the data needed for the calculation. VICIdial reports supply the numerator components: total dial attempts (from which telephony costs are estimated), total agent hours (from timeclock and agent activity reports), and total dispositions (identifying which calls produced results).

The formula breaks down as: CPL = (Agent Labor Cost + Telephony Cost + Lead Data Cost + Infrastructure Cost) / Number of Conversions. VICIdial’s efficiency directly impacts CPL through several levers: predictive dialing reduces agent idle time, AMD prevents agents from wasting time on answering machines, and adaptive dialing optimizes the balance between throughput and abandon rate.

Higher contact rates reduce CPL by converting more dial attempts into conversations. Higher conversion rates reduce CPL by producing more results from each conversation. Higher agent utilization reduces CPL by extracting more productive time from each paid hour.

Why It Matters

CPL determines whether an outbound campaign is financially viable. If the cost to acquire a lead exceeds the revenue it generates, the campaign is unprofitable regardless of other metrics.
