Robocall Mitigation

Robocall mitigation refers to the set of practices, technologies, and regulatory requirements designed to prevent illegal and unwanted automated calls. For VICIdial operators, robocall mitigation involves implementing STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication, registering in the FCC’s Robocall Mitigation Database, and maintaining calling practices that prevent carrier blocking and number flagging.

How It Works in VICIdial

Robocall mitigation for VICIdial operations involves multiple layers. At the carrier level, STIR/SHAKEN authentication provides cryptographic verification of caller ID. Carriers that do not implement STIR/SHAKEN must file a robocall mitigation plan with the FCC, and their traffic may be blocked by other carriers.

At the operational level, VICIdial administrators must ensure campaigns are configured to comply with FCC regulations — maintaining proper abandon rates, honoring DNC lists, respecting calling time restrictions, and presenting valid caller IDs. Analytics companies (like Nomorobo, TNS, and First Orion) monitor calling patterns and flag numbers that exhibit robocall behavior — high call volume, short duration calls, and consumer complaints.

VICIdial’s DID rotation and CID management features help distribute call volume across multiple numbers, reducing the likelihood of any single number being flagged. The DID hygiene process involves monitoring number reputation, replacing flagged numbers, and registering CNAM for all outbound DIDs.

Why It Matters

Robocall mitigation failures result in call blocking — carriers simply stop delivering your calls. Unlike regulatory fines, which come after enforcement action, call blocking happens automatically and immediately when analytics engines flag your traffic. A blocked number effectively has a 0% answer rate.

The robocall mitigation landscape continues to evolve, with increasing carrier-level blocking, new FCC rules, and analytics engines becoming more aggressive. Legitimate VICIdial operations must proactively manage their calling reputation through proper configuration, DID hygiene, and compliance practices. See our STIR/SHAKEN guide and the DID hygiene feature page for detailed mitigation strategies.
