Compliance (DNC)

Do Not Call

DNC (Do Not Call) refers to both the federal Do Not Call Registry maintained by the FTC and the internal do-not-call lists that VICIdial maintains. Numbers on DNC lists must not be called by outbound campaigns, and VICIdial provides multiple mechanisms to manage DNC compliance — including automatic DNC scrubbing, agent-triggered DNC addition, and real-time DNC checking during dialing.

How It Works in VICIdial

VICIdial manages DNC at two levels: the system-wide internal DNC list (vicidial_dnc table) and campaign-specific DNC lists. When leads are loaded into a list, they can be checked against the internal DNC list to prevent loading known DNC numbers. The hopper also checks leads against DNC lists before making them available for dialing.

Agents can add numbers to the DNC list by selecting a DNC disposition code. When a lead requests to be placed on the do-not-call list, the agent dispositions the call as DNC, and VICIdial automatically adds the number to the internal DNC table, preventing future dial attempts across all campaigns.

For federal DNC Registry compliance, organizations must regularly download the FTC’s registry data and import it into VICIdial’s DNC tables. Third-party DNC scrubbing services can also be integrated through VICIdial’s API to check numbers against state-level DNC lists and litigator databases.

Why It Matters

Calling a number on the federal DNC Registry carries fines of up to $51,744 per violation (as of 2024, adjusted annually). Beyond federal penalties, many states have their own DNC laws with additional penalties. For VICIdial operators, a single DNC compliance failure can result in regulatory action, lawsuits, and carrier account termination.

DNC management must be systematic and auditable. Regular imports of the federal registry, immediate processing of agent-reported DNC requests, and pre-campaign list scrubbing are minimum requirements. VICIdial’s built-in DNC features provide the technical foundation, but operational processes must ensure they are used consistently. See the list management guide for DNC management best practices.
