Caller ID
Caller ID (CID) is the phone number displayed on the recipient’s phone when VICIdial places an outbound call. In VICIdial, the outbound CID is a configurable campaign setting that determines which number appears to the called party, directly impacting answer rates and STIR/SHAKEN attestation levels.
How It Works in VICIdial
VICIdial offers multiple ways to manage outbound CID. The outbound_cid campaign setting specifies the default number displayed. CID Group Rotation allows cycling through multiple numbers to distribute call volume across DIDs and reduce the risk of number flagging. The filter_clean_cid_number setting sanitizes CID formatting before sending it to the carrier.
For local presence dialing, VICIdial can select a CID matching the area code of the number being dialed. This is configured through CID groups with area-code-matched entries. When the dialer places a call, it selects the CID whose area code matches the lead’s phone number, significantly improving answer rates.
The manual_dial_cid setting controls which CID is used when agents dial manually versus automated dialing, allowing different CID strategies for different dialing modes.
Why It Matters
CID management is one of the most impactful factors in outbound campaign performance. Calls from local numbers are answered 30-40% more often than calls from toll-free or out-of-area numbers. However, CID rotation and local presence must comply with STIR/SHAKEN regulations — only numbers your organization owns or has authorization to use should be presented as CID.
Numbers that generate high volumes of short-duration calls or consumer complaints risk being flagged as spam by analytics engines. Regular CID rotation and monitoring are essential to maintain answer rates. See the DID hygiene feature page for CID management strategies and our STIR/SHAKEN guide for attestation requirements.
