Voicemail Drop

Voicemail drop is a feature that automatically delivers a pre-recorded audio message to an answering machine or voicemail system when AMD (Answering Machine Detection) determines that a live person did not answer the call. Instead of connecting an agent to listen to a voicemail greeting and manually leave a message, VICIdial plays the recording automatically and moves on to the next call, saving significant agent time on high-volume outbound campaigns.

How It Works in VICIdial

When VICIdial’s AMD engine classifies an answered call as a machine, the system checks the amd_send_to_vmx setting to determine the next action. If voicemail drop is configured, the call is routed to an extension that plays the pre-recorded audio file after waiting for the voicemail greeting to finish (typically after the “beep”). The message plays in its entirety, and the call is then disconnected automatically.

The voicemail drop audio file is configured at the campaign level and is typically a short (15-30 second) message that identifies the caller, provides a brief reason for the call, and includes a callback number. Multiple voicemail drop messages can be configured for different campaigns or call scenarios, and recordings are managed through the VICIdial admin interface.

Timing is critical for effective voicemail drops. The system must detect the end of the voicemail greeting (the beep) before playing the message. If the detection timing is off, the message may start before the beep — resulting in a truncated recording — or leave excessive silence at the beginning. VICIdial’s AMD sensitivity settings help optimize this timing, though results vary by carrier and voicemail system.

Why It Matters

In outbound campaigns where 30-60% of answered calls reach voicemail, voicemail drop transforms otherwise wasted dials into marketing touchpoints. Without voicemail drop, campaigns have two choices: hang up on machines (losing the opportunity) or have agents manually listen to greetings and leave messages (wasting 30-60 seconds per machine encounter). Voicemail drop eliminates both problems.

A well-crafted voicemail drop message can generate 3-8% callback rates, effectively turning answering machines from a nuisance into a lead nurturing channel. Combined with accurate AMD detection and predictive dialing, voicemail drop ensures agents spend their time talking to live contacts while machines still receive a professional message. Be aware that voicemail drop combined with AMD may trigger TCPA considerations — pre-recorded messages delivered to wireless numbers have specific compliance requirements. Consult legal counsel on your specific use case.
