Answer Rate

Answer rate is the percentage of outbound dial attempts that are picked up (answered) by the called party, regardless of whether the answer is a live person or an answering machine. Answer rate differs from contact rate because it includes all answered calls — including those handled by voicemail, AMD-detected machines, and fax tones — not just calls that reach a live human.

How It Works in VICIdial

VICIdial calculates answer rate from the vicidial_log table by dividing calls with any “answered” result (all dial statuses except NA, B, DC, and system errors) by total dial attempts. The answer rate is visible in campaign summary reports and can be tracked across different time periods, lists, and campaigns.

Answer rate is heavily influenced by factors outside of VICIdial’s direct control — primarily the quality of the caller ID displayed and the STIR/SHAKEN attestation level. Calls from numbers flagged as “Spam Likely” by analytics engines see answer rates 50-70% lower than clean numbers. Local-presence CID (matching the called party’s area code) typically improves answer rates by 25-40%.

The time of day, day of week, and lead demographics also significantly affect answer rate. VICIdial’s timezone filtering ensures calls are placed during legal and optimal hours, but further time-of-day optimization often requires analyzing answer rate patterns in campaign reports.

Why It Matters

Answer rate is the first filter in the conversion funnel — if calls are not answered, there is zero chance of a conversation or conversion. In the post-STIR/SHAKEN era, answer rates for outbound call centers have declined significantly as consumers increasingly screen and block unknown calls.

Monitoring answer rate trends is essential for detecting CID degradation (numbers being flagged as spam), carrier issues, and list quality problems. A sudden drop in answer rate often indicates that outbound DIDs need to be rotated or that the carrier’s STIR/SHAKEN attestation has changed. See the DID hygiene feature page for answer rate optimization strategies.
