Remote Agent

A remote agent is a VICIdial user who connects to the call center system from a location outside the physical office — typically working from home or a satellite location. Remote agents access the agent screen through a web browser and connect their phone audio via SIP, IAX2, WebRTC, or an external phone callback.

How It Works in VICIdial

VICIdial supports several remote agent connection methods. The most common are: a SIP or PJSIP softphone registered to the VICIdial server over the internet, an IAX2 softphone (better for NAT traversal), WebRTC audio through the browser (no softphone needed), or a callback to an external phone number (VICIdial calls the agent’s phone and keeps the line open).

The agent screen is accessed through HTTPS in any modern browser. For audio, WebRTC is the simplest option — the agent only needs a browser and headset. For more reliable audio, a dedicated SIP softphone (like MicroSIP, Zoiper, or Linphone) provides better quality and independent audio controls.

VICIdial also has a “Remote Agents” feature in the admin panel that configures external phone numbers as permanent agent extensions. The system calls the remote agent’s phone when they log in and maintains the audio connection throughout their shift.

Why It Matters

Remote agent support has become essential for modern call centers. VICIdial’s ability to support agents anywhere with an internet connection enables distributed workforces, international agent teams, and rapid scaling without physical infrastructure investments. The shift to remote work has made this one of VICIdial’s most valued capabilities.

The primary challenge with remote agents is audio quality and reliability. Home internet connections, consumer-grade routers, and NAT issues can all degrade call quality.
